Features of the OTTO-PerforatedMat
1. Clean separation of layers
Everything stays where it is supposed to – including the Mat itself
In riding arenas with an inadequate or no matting system, the hooves may dig up stones and other material from the subbase into the footing already after a short while.
The OTTO-PerforatedMat, however, creates a clean and durable separation between subbase (in most cases crushed stone) and footing (sand/textile blend).
This is possible by means of so-called ‘sand-locking-rings’. Due to their conic shape, neither can sand subvert the Mat nor can stones travel up into the footing. That is why the term ‘separation layer’ is often used in connection with the OTTO-PerforatedMat.
Moreover, the sand-locking-rings provide stable fixation of the Mat and prevent it from shifting.
2. Reliable and quick drainage
Farewell to puddles in the arena
Water puddles in the arena are not only annoying and – many horses reject the course because of them. Moreover, muddy paddocks can lead to painful hoof diseases in the long run.
The solution: The OTTO-PerforatedMat lets any excessive water drain quickly. In combination with a suitable subbase and a water-permeable footing, this means that there will not even remain a drop of water on top of the surface.
With the OTTO-PerforatedMat, muddy paddocks and unrideable arenas become a relic of a time gone by.
252 holes in each mat provide drainage of excess water making the arena useable immediately after heavy rain, and the horses will never have to stand in puddles or mud when they are out in the paddocks.. The layer under the mats creates a pathway for high-volume water flow. Traditional arena bases are designed for water to flow over them, slowing down the drainage of your arena base. OTTO-PerforatedMats are designed to allow water to flow through them thereby solving all of these disadvantages.
3. Water storage
Keeps the footing moist and the money in your pocket
Since sand is a water-bound material, the footing consistently needs to be kept in an earth-moist condition so that the horses have enough grip and no dust can be whirled up. This way, a riding surface which requires frequent irrigation can cause a high amount of time, effort and costs.
Due to a unique system of water cups on the topside of the OTTO-PerforatedMat, enough water is stored to consistently supply the footing with the needed moisture for an extended period of time
OTTO-PerforatedMats are designed with a water retention system that holds up to one gallon per mat. That equals 1,200 gallons for a standard 20 x 60 dressage court. The entire surface maintains even hydration for a more consistent footing. This provides a correct, even, and consistent moisture level across the entire surface, thereby decreasing costs and increasing surface performance.
4. Concussion absorption
Enhancing safety, health and performance
In equestrian sports, especially showjumping, a considerable amount of force is applied on the surface. Considering a horse’s average weight of approx. 1,300 lbs, up to 5 tons of force may be applied on the surface when horse and rider land after a jump.
In order to prevent short-term and long-term injuries of the horse, an equestrian surface needs to be able to absorb a large part of this force.
How is this possible? – With the OTTO-PerforatedMat
According to a scientific study by the German Association for Technical Inspection (TÜV), the OTTO-PerforatedMat absorbs more than 40% of the force applied on the surface.
This means that a large part of the force is absorbed by the surface instead of traveling back into the horses’ legs and being a considerable strain on joints, tendons and ligaments.
Stability and Concussion Absorption
OTTO-PerforatedMats increase the stability of the footing with a system of traction-knobs on the upper side of the mat. The traction-knobs are set at differing heights to maximize the stability. This guarantees a secure surface, preventing horses from slipping – a clear advantage during sharp turns.
OTTO-PerforatedMats absorb up to 40% of the energy caused by the hoof fall. The German Association for Technical Inspection (TÜV) confirmed the mat minimizes shock and concussion on impact. The mat provides this grip while allowing some movement of the hoof, minimizing concussion and hyper-flexion of tendons and ligaments during each phase of movement. Ready for takeoff
In addition to shock absorption, an ideal riding surface also needs to be able to elastically return a part of the applied force. This will provide the horses with increased stability and will enhance their performance.
The OTTO-PerforatedMat has been specifically engineered for this purpose
Due to the ideal density of the recycled PVC material used to produce the OTTO-PerforatedMat, the Mat not only absorbs a large part of the force applied on it, but it also provides the horses’ legs with the optimal amount of rebound.
6. Skid resistance
Lean back and relax … or rather lean sideways
What if the horses accelerate, make sharp turns or stop abruptly? In these cases, the hooves need especially good grip and must not slip.
If the footing layer is applied on a flat base it will shift under the weight of the hooves. Even if the base is equipped with knobs which all have the same height, the horses will slip because, even in this case, the footing is not provided with sufficient grip and will shift, similar to an avalanche.
Thanks to a unique system of high and low knobs as well as high and low water cups on the topside of the OTTO-PerforatedMat, the footing is provided with enough stability will not shift, even when the horses make very sharp turns.
7. Temperature resistance
Sahara or Siberia – the OTTO-PerforatedMat can handle it
Countless other types of separation layers need to be interlocked or installed edge to edge.
Since every type of plastic expands and shrinks according to temperature fluctuations, this may lead to ‘wave-shaped’ arenas, since the material does not have any space to expand.
Whether torrential rainfalls, lowest-degree winters or scorching head: The OTTO-PerforatedMat maintains what it promises.
After all, millions of OTTO-PerforatedMats have been installed worldwide in various types of climates – and they work perfectly.
Since the Mats are made of high-quality recycled PVC, weather conditions cannot cause any damage to the OTTO-PerforatedMat.
During strong temperature changes, the OTTO-PerforatedMats can expand and shrink without any trouble as they are installed with a small gap between each other.
Well-performing expansion joint — Any material tends to expand when warming and contract when cooling. For large areas like paddocks or equestrian arenas, even a slight expansion has a great impact. Systems without expansion joints will bulge out when warming. Sand can trickle down in the emerging cavities, forcing the mat up and dislodging it from its initial position.
A gap of approximately 1.5 inches is set between each mat. The structure of the bottom side and weight will lock the mats into place. Sand cannot get under the mats, eliminating bulging and shifting of the surface
Do it right once – be happy forever
Since the OTTO-PerforatedMat is produced using highest-quality material, it is extremely durable. After all, the Mats come with a guarantee of 20 years on functionality!
Even if the footing layer has to be replaced after many years, the entire base including the OTTO-PerforatedMat can be left untouched. After merely replacing the top layer, the arena will be in perfect shape, just like on its first day.
OTTO-PerforatedMats creates a proper and durable separation between the footing and the substructure. This increases the lifespan of the arena. Stones will not migrate up from the drainage layer into the sand footing, and sand will not migrate down into the drainage layer. This ensures a long lasting arena surface that remains consistent from installation into the future.
Durability & Warranty
OTTO-PerforatedMats have been installed on more than 5,000 equestrian facilities throughout the world and have impressively proven maximum performance and durability. OTTO Sport gives a 20-year warranty on the Mats when installed according to specifications.
OTTO-PerforatedMats are manufactured from recycled synthetic materials, which actively contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development. Quality management also includes regular screenings conducted by the German Association for Technical Inspection (TÜV) that approve compliance with statutory regulations for soil and groundwater protection. According to this, the OTTO-PerforatedMats comply with all standards set by the German“Bundesbodenschutz-Verordnung” (Federal Soil and Groundwater Protection Order).

Equestrian Arena Construction Scheme of Layers
This construction is based on the three-layers model (sub-base layer – upper base – footing). First, topsoil should be removed and subsoil be compacted to get an even and stable surface. For the construction of outdoor arenas, a light slope of about 1.5% is necessary. For indoor arenas a slope is not necessary.

How Arena Surfaces Affect Horse Biomechanics
Every stride is influenced by how the hoof interacts with the ground and the various qualities of the arena layers. An ideal arena surface allows horses to move efficiently, minimizes concussion, absorbs shock, provides support, and returns energy back to the horse. Sand Note: All our footings are designed to be mixed with sand. There are, however, significant variations in sand in each area. Not all sands are appropriate to use as footing for your equestrian arena. There are many factors you should consider in determining the appropriate sand, including, without limitation, your riding style, the number of horses using the ring and the duration of such ring use, watering capability for the ring, the status of any current existing footing materials, seasonal weather conditions, and whether you ride on an indoor or outdoor horse arena. Combining Master’s Blend Footing with the correct type and depth of sand is required in order to build a safe arena surface. Please choose properly sized arena sand based on your proposed use. Feel free to call and discuss your arena questions with one of our representatives today!
“It’s important that the soil is neither too hard nor too smooth. For horses, the soil has to be a little skidding, so it shouldn’t be too blunt. Additionally, the soil has to be water-permeable and ought to have a good degree of moisture. It should neither be muddy nor too dry.
OTTO Sport mats fulfill these requirements. We also use OTTO mats in our indoor arena as we need a soil which is level but not slippery. The knobs on the mats provide a good consistency so horses will find a strong foothold.”Klaus Balkenhol
