How Multipurpose Mag Works on Dust

Absorption: Magnesium chloride has a strong affinity for water. When it's mixed into the soil, it pulls moisture from the air and the soil environment into its structure. This process helps to maintain a higher moisture content around it, which can be beneficial for dust control and soil stabilization.
Binding Effect: As magnesium chloride absorbs moisture, it forms a solution that helps to bind dust particles together, reducing airborne dust by keeping the particles moist and heavier.
Soil Moisture Retention: By absorbing moisture, magnesium chloride aids in keeping the soil damp, which can improve the soil's structure for a period, making it less likely to erode or become loose and dusty.
When magnesium chloride absorbs moisture, it hydrates and can form magnesium chloride hydrate, which has water molecules incorporated into its crystal structure. This hydration process is what allows it to contribute to the moisture content of the soil, providing benefits like dust suppression and freeze prevention in equestrian arenas or on dirt roads.

How Multipurpose Mag Works on Ice

Magnesium chloride (MgCl₂) is effective at melting ice due to several chemical and physical properties:

Lowers the Freezing Point: When magnesium chloride is spread on ice, it dissolves in the small amount of available water to form a brine solution. This solution has a lower freezing point than pure water. This means that the temperature at which the solution will freeze is lower than 0°C (32°F), the freezing point of pure water. This process is known as the colligative property effect, where adding a solute (in this case, magnesium chloride) to a solvent (water) lowers its freezing point.
Exothermic Process: The dissolution of magnesium chloride in water is an exothermic process. This means it releases heat energy as it dissolves, which helps to melt the ice even further by providing additional thermal energy.
Hygroscopicity: As previously discussed, magnesium chloride is hygroscopic; it attracts moisture from the air. This property ensures that even in low humidity conditions, it can still work to some extent by pulling in whatever moisture is available to aid in the melting process.
Efficient at Lower Temperatures: Unlike sodium chloride (rock salt), which loses effectiveness below -6°C (21°F), magnesium chloride can work down to temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F). This makes it particularly useful in colder climates where other de-icers might fail.
Reaction with Ice: Magnesium chloride reacts with ice directly to some degree. The reaction generates heat, aiding in the melting process. The chemical reaction is not as straightforward as just dissolving but involves the formation of a hydrated form of magnesium chloride, which also contributes to melting.

Here’s a basic explanation of how it works when applied

1

Application

Magnesium chloride is spread over the ice or snow.
2

Interaction with Water

Ice begins to melt from environmental warmth or sunlight, producing water. This water then interacts with the magnesium chloride.
3

Formation of Brine

The magnesium chloride dissolves in this water to form a brine solution. This solution has a lower freezing point, so it stays liquid at colder temperatures.
4

Melting Process

The brine solution lowers the freezing point of the ice around it, causing more ice to melt. The exothermic nature of the dissolution process provides additional heat to aid in this melting.

The combination of all these factors makes magnesium chloride an effective de-icing agent, especially in harsh winter conditions. However, it’s worth mentioning that while magnesium chloride is quite good at melting ice, care must be taken to manage its use to prevent damage to vegetation, concrete, or metal surfaces due to its corrosive nature over time.

Multipurpose Mag FAQs

Do I still need to water my arena after applying Magnesium Chloride?

Generally, no additional watering is required when you use Magnesium Chloride for dust control. The product works by attracting moisture from the air to the sand particles, which helps in binding the dust. However:

  • In Drier Climates: If you’re in an area with low humidity, you might need to lightly water the arena occasionally. For instance, users like Lynnleigh have found that a light sprinkle now and then helps without overdoing it.

Here’s why you typically don’t need to water:

  • Surface Application: Magnesium Chloride is applied to the top layer of the arena.
  • Natural Penetration: Gravity, along with the mechanical action of hooves, naturally helps the product to seep into the footing, encapsulating the sand particles.

Important Note: Over-watering can wash away the Magnesium Chloride from the surface, reducing its effectiveness. If you choose to water, do so sparingly to avoid diluting or rinsing the product away.

Is Magnesium Chloride safe to use, and how long does its effect last?

Magnesium Chloride is considered safe for use and handling:

  • Toxicity: It is significantly less toxic than common substances; it’s 2.5 times less toxic than table salt, roughly half as toxic as baking soda, and has a toxicity profile similar to vitamin C (ascorbic acid).
  • User Safety: While it’s not overly caustic like calcium chloride, it can have a drying effect, so it’s advisable to rinse off your horse’s hooves and legs after exposure to prevent any potential irritation.

Duration of Effectiveness:

  • Application Frequency: For optimal performance, Magnesium Chloride should be reapplied annually. This ensures consistent dust suppression and soil stabilization throughout the year.

How do I maintain my footing once it has been fully stabilized with Magnesium Chloride?

Maintenance of your riding surface after stabilization involves regular grooming:

  • Grooming Equipment: Use a tine harrow or similar drag-type device to maintain your arena’s footing. These tools help to:
    • Lift and turn over the footing from the base.
    • Fluff and aerate the surface, which is especially important to prevent dust in untreated areas.
  • Ideal Grooming Tools: The most effective grooming tools feature “teeth” that can penetrate the footing. They should be capable of:
    • Agitating the material to mix it thoroughly.
    • Smoothing the surface to provide a consistent riding condition.
