How to Replace the Chisel Points on a SportPro and Premier Arena Drags

By October 28, 2024No Comments

When getting your arena ready for winter, don’t forget to do the maintenance on your drag as well.

Just as your horse arena requires maintenance to keep it in tip-top shape, your Premier Equestrian SportPro Arena Drag also requires occasional maintenance to keep it performing at its best.

When the chisel points on your SportPro Arena Drag start to wear down, it’s time to replace them. Doing so will ensure your SportPro Arena Drag functions properly and continues to deliver optimum results for grooming your riding surface.

How to rotate chisel points on your arena groomer

What are chisel points?ย

Chisel points are protective shields that bolt to the tips of each and every S-tine on your arena drag. The chisel points protect the S-tine from wearing down over time. They are designed to take the brunt of regular arena grooming. The tips of the chisel points are meant to naturally wear down over time.

Chisel points are double-sided, so you get two uses out of each set. As one side wears down you loosen the bolt and flip the chisel point upside down to get another use out of it. Once the second side is worn down and you notice the chisel points get nubby and rounded, itโ€™s time to replace your chisel points.

What wears down chisel points?

  • Usage (depending how frequently youโ€™re grooming your riding arena)
  • The type of sand and footing you have (more abrasive sands will wear down a chisel point more quickly)

When is it time to replace my chisel points?

Chisel points are commonly replaced every six months to a year. We recommend ordering new chisel points once you switch your current set of chisel points to the second side so theyโ€™re available when you need them.

What happens if you donโ€™t replace chisel points?ย

If you fail to properly replace the chisel points on your arena drag, the actual steel of the S-tine will start to wear down. If this continues over time, youโ€™ll damage your S-tines and will have to replace them, which is expensiveโ€”nearly five times the cost of chisel points.

How do you install new chisel points?

Chisel points are very easy to install using a socket set or wrench. Premier Equestrian chisel point sets come with new bolts, nuts, and hardware, so you have the complete package with each and every order. You can order new chisel points online or call us to order over the phone: 800-611-6109.
