Tackling Dust in the Winter Months: Protecting You and Your Horse

By November 20, 2024No Comments

As we approach the winter months, we face not only colder temperatures but also an increase in dust. While often overlooked, dust can be more than just a nuisance; it poses serious health risks for both you and your horse.

Dust consists of tiny particles of soft minerals that become airborne. The sand in your riding arena may contain materials like shavings, manure, limestone, sandstone, or calcium carbonateโ€”these minerals and debris that can easily generate dust.

Both horses and humans have natural mechanisms to expel dust, but there are limits. For many, a small amount of dust may not be a significant concern. Our lungs are equipped with various defense systems. These mechanisms trap most dust particles, which can then be sneezed out, coughed up, or swallowed (not the most pleasant thought, but itโ€™s true).

However, excessive dust exposure, especially when it contains harmful substances, can overwhelm the bodyโ€™s defenses, deplete the immune system and cause a host or respiratory issues. This may lead to permanent lung damage, chronic inflammation, fibrosis, and scarring, resulting in respiratory diseases such as asthma, COPD, and heaves.

Fortunately, the dust generated from the breakdown of soft minerals and organic matter is generally less harmful than other types. Nonetheless, itโ€™s essential to take steps to reduce exposure.

Controlling Moisture: The Best Solution for Dust

The most effective way to combat dust is by controlling moisture levels. Adding water to your arena footing not only reduces dust but also enhances equine biomechanics.

However, during sub-zero temperatures, watering may be challenging. In such cases, adding magnesium chloride to your arena surface can be a great alternative. This compound draws moisture from the air into the footing, making it particularly effective in humid climates and indoor arenas. Safe Step Extreme 8300 Magnesium chloride is one of the fastest-acting premium ice melters available and is made from 100% magnesium chloride hexahydrate, which is effective in extremely cold temperatures while being gentler on vegetation and concrete.

If you can water your arena, consider using Premier Slow Dustโ„ข to further reduce dust and limit the frequency of watering. Slow Dustโ„ข is a dust control product designed to bind dust particles effectively. It utilizes a flocculation polymer that connects with microscopic dust particles, which are naturally charged. When water is added, the polymer and dust particles form a network that makes them heavier and prevents them from becoming airborne.

By using both magnesium chloride and Slow Dustโ„ข in tandem, you can significantly mitigate the risks associated with dust inhalation for both your horse and you. Take proactive steps this winter to ensure a healthier environment in your riding arena!
